What is a Die Crack ?

by zoltan
(Canada)

Question: Between a USA Jefferson Nickel's motto. I have a slash mark between the pluribus and the unum. So it looks like E Pluribus/Unum. Its a lefted slashed line. The line doesn't start from the rim, its just perfect looking like it belongs there.

My Answer: A Die Crack is a fine raised line on a coin that was caused by a crack in the die.

It is possible that what you describe was caused by a die crack or some sort of die defect.

I am not an expert in error coins, but I have a few suggestions that you might try to find your answer.

You can go to All Experts.com and ask your question there. This link will take you to the page of coin collecting experts available to answer questions - All Experts - Coin Collecting. Once you get there, read about the experts and pick the one that specializes in Jefferson Nickels or error coins. You will need a good photograph of your coin to get an accurate reply.

You can also try asking your question in forums that specialize in coin collecting and get an opinion from several collectors all in one place. Again, you will need a good photograph for them to give an accurate assessment of your coin. You can do a search for coin collecting forums or bulletin boards, or you can try one of the links below.
