Should I keep coins in original rolls?

by Clay
(Missouri)

Question: I read somewhere that coins should not be kept in the original paper they are wrapped in because the paper has acid in it which will cause damage to the coin. Is this correct?

My Answer: Yes, in my opinion it is better to store your coins that you intend to keep for a long time in Coin Tubes that are specially made for this purpose. Coin Tubes are very inexpensive and well worth the money.

Should I leave my coins in the paper roll?

by Charlie Christensen
(Portland, OR)

I buy Presidential dollars in rolls from the bank. I have been leaving them in the paper roll thinking the intact roll may have more value than individual coins. I have quite a few Presidential quarters also stored in the paper rolls. What is your advice?

US mint wrapped coins

Question: Should you take coins out of the mint wrap paper and put into safe tubes or will it devalue them?

My Answer: If you are talking about rolls of coins, then I suggest that you remove the coins very carefully from the wrapper and place them in archive safe Coin Tubes.

The paper that coins are rolled in can actually end up causing damage to your coins over time. Acids from the paper can actually cause the coins to discolor.

Make sure that the tubes you choose are "coin safe" tubes that do not contain PVC which can also be very damaging to coins over a long period of time.

Many collectors will use coin tubes to store their rolls of coins and keep the paper wrapper as well. Just be very careful while removing the coins from the wrapper and then store the wrappers in a zip-lock bag.
